The devil is in the details

Being asked by Stanley how we would improve their consumer line of hand tools, Shikuan Chen, Jason Yang, and I found that the answers to that question lay not in big-picture-ideas, but were to be found in the smallest of user interactions and design details.

In our initial consumer study, we observed tools slipping out of customers’ hands during use and learned that they would have liked to apply more force than the tools allowed for. Aesthetically following Stanley’s strong brand, we went on to functionally enhance the products with improved ergonomics through the use of textures and new manufacturing technologies and we added features that provided additional leverage.
