Designing the first of a kind
During my time at Asus, I designed quite a few “firsts”, one of which was the Asus V1 notebook; part of a product series that sported Asus’s first proprietary docking station, a feature that posed considerable design, mechanical engineering and electronic engineering challenges, especially since the dock needed to accommodate not only the V1, but also its smaller sibling, the V2.
A closely defined target market
With the V1 being a notebook computer dedicated to business users, Wen-Ham Chiang and I put a great deal of attention on visually highlighting the product’s key features, such as the fingerprint sensor and the built-in 1.3 Megapixel camera.
Successful in the marketplace and on the show floor
Released in early 2006, the V1 was not only awarded with an iF Design Award, the notebook was also very successful commercially, selling over 500,000 units between April 2006 and August 2008.
